Sieve & Sort Dehydrated Onion

Sieve & sort dehydrated onion with our FDA complied sifters

This blog will provide an overview of the farm-to-table journey of dehydrated onions, their types and varieties, their usage and applications as well as information on where and why FDA-compliant sifters play an important role in their production.

As the name implies, dried and dehydrated onions are powder & granules that can be preserved for an extended period of time (depending on the packaging) and used as needed.

There are many uses for dehydrated onion flakes and powder. Among its many uses is as a seasoning for a variety of dishes, as a primary ingredient in sauces, snacks, and drinks, and in cooking as a substitute for fresh onions as it is easy to handle & eliminates the need to chop them, as an ingredient in various mixed spices, & many other things.

In addition to reducing the effort of chopping a fresh onion, dehydrated onions have numerous health benefits as well. A dehydrated onion is low in fat and calories, and high in potassium and calcium.

On the market, dehydrated onions are available in different sizes, such as flakes, chopped, minced, granules, and powder. Every type of dehydrated onion begins with the same process.

Let’s see how dehydrated onions are made and where & why sifters and sorters play an important role.

From farm to manufacturing unit

Dehydrating onions begins the process of growing and cultivating onions. Onions are grown and supplied by farmers to manufacturing facilities.

Peeling & washing

Once the onions have been received, they are stored and unloaded as required. After the onions have been unloaded, they are peeled off to remove unwanted outer portions. To remove dirt, peeled onions are washed in 90-100 PPM sodium hypochlorite solution in a water tunnel.

Slicing & Drying

Following the proper washing of the onions, the onions are sent to a slicing machine for cutting and slicing. In an imperial dryer, sliced onions are dehydrated and dried. During the automatic drying process, a total of five stages take place to ensure that the taste and aroma of the onion remain intact.

Sieving/grading

To remove skin, husk, and uneven-sized dehydrated onions, dried and dehydrated kibble is passed through vibratory sieving machines.

In the case of dehydrated onions, our robust linear and rectangular sieving machine Linea Sivtek® may be the most suitable option.

Color sorting

In addition, the dehydrated onions are passed through an optical color sorter machine to remove impurities such as black particles.

Metal Detection

To remove any ferrous metal impurities introduced during the preceding process, the product is passed through magnetic rods or magnetic separator belts.

For removing ferrous impurities, Galaxy Sivtek offers a variety of magnetic solutions, including magnetic rods and magnetic belts.

Sizing & Milling

Depending on the buyer’s persona and the market demand, dehydrated onions are milled and ground into chopped, minced, granules, and powder forms.

Grading, sieving & safety screening

Once the dehydrated onion is milled into the desired size, it is graded, de-dusted, sieved and safety screened. Dehydrated onions are processed into five different sizes.

Safety screening, de-dusting, gradation & sieving is mandatory to process in order

1. To ensure that the product is free of contaminants (removal of unwanted foreign material)

2. To obtain uniform size (by passing it through different sizes of mesh opening screens)

There is a wide range of Sivtek round vibro screens & centrifugal sifters, including Sivtek Vibro Separator®, Sivtek Tumbler Screen®, Inline Sivtek®, and Sivtek Roto Sifter®, which are proven to be effective for screening, sieving, and grading dried onions.

Packing

The sieved and screened product is then weighed, packed, and sealed in poly bags that resist moisture or are moisture-proof. It is now possible to dispatch these poly bags in corrugated boxes or paper bags.
