Palm oil processing is associated with the processing of large amounts of sludge produced during production. This sludge is usually a conglomeration of solid contaminants, water and oil. The operational processes require proper separation of these materials because it will help to minimize waste and enhance processing throughput.
This case study highlights a palm oil processing facility in the Philippines where traditional sludge dewatering methods posed operational challenges. The use of Sivtek Vibro Separator contributed to a better filtration process, less time spent on processing, and environmental issues.
The facility was using conventional open sludge pits for natural dewatering. While this method had been widely used, it created several operational difficulties.
The sludge required approximately 7 to 8 days to dewater naturally. This long line of production slowed down the general flow of production and posed delays during the processing.
The large size of the sludge pits also meant a large land requirement, which reduced the overall space for other requirements of the production process.
Open dewatering pits increased the risk of groundwater contamination and created odor-related issues. Environmental compliance became more difficult due to these factors which also increased the chances of receiving complaints and facing regulatory pressure.
The facility needed a faster, cleaner, and more space-efficient method to manage palm oil sludge filtration.
In order to overcome these hurdles, the palm oil filtration process at the facility incorporated the use of the Sivtek Vibro Separator.
The equipment was chosen due to the skill of isolating solids and liquids by high-frequency vibration. This rendered it highly applicable in the palm oil sludge dewatering process, where speed and efficiency of separation is critical.
The system had a number of benefits:
Through this solution, the facility could switch to the slow land-consuming process to a more controlled and efficient means of filtration.
Sludge dewatering was made extremely more efficient with the use of the Sivtek Vibro Separator.
Instead of waiting several days for natural dewatering, the system helped reduce moisture content much faster. The mixture could also be reduced to approximately 20-percent moisture, and the next drying process would be more successful and take less time.
This enhanced an easier workflow in the facility and minimized the bottlenecks of the traditional sludge handling.
The implementation of the Vibro Separator delivered clear operational benefits.
Increased production efficiency
The dewatering time decreased and contributed to an enhanced throughput and ensured that the production cycle continued at a smoother pace.
Better space utilization
The large open pits were no longer as necessary, hence the facility was able to utilize better the space they had at their disposal to meet other operational needs.
Improved environmental performance
Enclosed filtration methodology was used to mitigate the chances of contamination of groundwater and allowed to limit odor concerns, which favored a clean and more compliant operation.
More reliable sludge handling
The plant had a more predictable and manageable approach to palm oil sludge and this enhanced the entire control of the process.
Palm oil filtration is an important part of efficient palm oil processing. Failure to properly handle sludge can lead to delays in production, occupying valuable space, and introduce negative environmental outcomes.
Using the Sivtek Vibro Separator instead of standard dewatering practices allowed the facility to enhance the performance of filtration, lowered processing duration, and made the operations more sustainable.
This case highlights how advanced screening technology can play a valuable role in palm oil processing by helping manufacturers achieve better productivity, cleaner operations, and more effective sludge management.
